Notes re: John Ludt:

Book of Youngstown & Mahoning Valley page 368- he had a puyblic education and worked in the boiler shopas a young man and for the railroads. Top pay on the railroad at that time was about $1.00 a day. In 1885 he founded The Business House of John Ludt. He dealt in hot air furnaces and also perfected an organization for doing all classes of sheet metal work and later became an etensive contractor for slate, tin and gravel roofing. He was the founder and active in this enterprise for thirty years until his death on November 26, 1915.

He was a democrate and was elected as a member of the city council. He is buried in a private Moselium in Belmont Cemetery.

The 1870 census shows Philip’s occupation as “dryman” ; Frank and Peter as working in Boiler shop; John as apprentice tinnery; William as a cigar maker; It also shows 3 other children

Obituary of Philip Ludt in the Youngstown Vindicator on Thursday, Jan 24, 1895 on the front page:

“A PIONEER REMOVED”

He Succombes to the Inevitable After a Lengthy Illness.

Philip Ludt, a pioneer resident of this city, died late yesterday afternoon at the home of his son John, 112 Prospect Street. He has been in ill health for some time.

The deceased was an important factor in the German Lutheran Church, being one of its originators. He was widely known in this city and vicinity. His sons are John, Frank, William, Louise, of this city, Chris, of DeForest, and Mrs. Max Sartorius is his daughter.

Philip spent many years in Youngstown, with his home on Federal Street. He was in the coal mines of the district, but later engaged in business

The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 1 o’clock from the late residence of the deceased, and at 2 o’clock from the German Lutheran Church.”

Obituary of Mary Elizabeth Lude in the Youngstown Vindicator on Tuesday, January 14, 1919, page 17.

“Funeral services for the late Mrs. Mary Elizabth Ludt, wife of Frank Ludt, who died at 8:50 p.m. Sunday in her home, 842 High Street, following a long illness, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday from the residence and 2:30 p.m. from the Grace English Lutheran Church with Rev. Jesse Leroy Miller officiating. Interment will be made in the Oak Hill Cemetary.

Mrs. Ludt, a daughter of the Rev. A.B. and Rachel Beardeman was born in Lisbon, Ohio August 22, 1854, coming to live in this city 16 years ago. Surviving with the husband are the following children: Mrs. William Thomas, Mrs. G.E. Beede, Mrs. Fred Craft, Frank Jr., and Edward, all of this city and Paul of Erie. She leaves two sisters, Mrs. Edwin Webb and Mrs. G.D. Gessaman, both of this city and two brothers, Paul Beardeman of Jackson, Miss. and the Rev. G.D. Beardeman of Findley, Ohio.
